Conquering the concrete jungle

July 25th, 2010

My favorite thing about New York is that you never need to quite know where you’re going in order to get somewhere.  Just last night, my friends and I hopped on a random Subway line, hopped off at a random stop, and wound up in Little Italy at a romantically-lit restaurant twirling pasta round our forks.

My name is Brittany, and I’ll be joining Robyn this summer to keep you posted on the excitement of Fashion University and the wonder of its location: New York City!

Hailing from a college town with exactly one grocery store, one movie theater, and one Italian restaurant, I predicted this summer would revolve around a map of where-to-be’s and what-to-do’s. I am astounded at how unnecessary direction is in this city (unless, of course, you are trying to head home). Every corner has a coffee shop, a laundrymat, a bank.  It’s never a struggle to find a pharmacy, a park, or an eatery.  NYC is in short supply of absolutely nothing—and shopping is no exclusion to that.

Hosting everything from high-end brands to indie designers, from vintage to trendy, from pricey to affordable—New York has a store and a style for everyone.  And if you are looking to find your own style, this is the place to do it.

The moment I moved in, my roommate, Kerry, and I headed out to SoHo to walk up and down Broadway—no destination in mind.  We found our way into H&M so Kerry could pick up some sunglasses, and I have to say, if you are looking to create a style, H&M is the place to do it.  There is no better (or more affordable) place to mix and match pieces.  H&M is one of those stores that feels like everything is one of a kind—maybe just because it offers so much, but I swear, every time you go back, you can never re-find what you once saw, and in its place are all new products.

H&M offers a lot of great basics, and, personally, I’m a fan of wearing the basics and then dolling them up with stand-out jewelry.  Jewelry is the less intimidating way to wear something off-beat or inventive.  If you aren’t quite ready to rock something like these rose-patterned jeans from H&M, you might be more confident to dangle a rose bouquet from your neck, like this one from Juicy Couture.

Offering everything from an Eiffel Tower, to a Prom Queen bouquet, to a breakfast skillet, the Juicy charms are an adorable, unthreatening way to showcase your personality.  Juicy makes very sweet starter charm bracelets, but if it was me, I’d just put a solo charm on a necklace chain. (Most definitely the breakfast skillet.)

Perhaps this gives you an idea of how my summer is being spent: wandering and wanting.  Every corner taunts me, whether I spy a boutique or just an intriguing street style.  Is there anywhere more temptingly inspirational than New York City?
